Created in 20 episode serial form, 'Phobia The Radio Play' is a homage to the wonderful Elvis Presley movies of the 1950s and 1960s.
A regular Sunday afternoon TV offering that I watched as a boy were those very Elvis movies and they gave me a lifelong love of the man, the music and silly plot lines.
Phobia is the tale of Steve - Elvis impersonator and acrophobia sufferer -who together with his partner Tanya are drawn into the vengeful clutches of dentist of the year - Dr Jack Hammer. Together with their friends Tiffany and The Dane they travel to the country town of Parkes to save the world from an invasion from Mars.
Our story opens with NASA having lost its latest unmanned mission to Mars. As if that isn't enough crisis for one episode - we also meet Steve as he faces the Phobia that limits his life.
Tiffany joins our story and shares a job disappointment with her best friend Tanya. The opportunity to party away that misfortune introduces The Dane, and together with Elvis impersonator Steve, our four heroes venture into what will be a very long night.
In episode three Tiffany becomes the second of our characters to be overwhelmed by their phobia. On the way to the 39th floor of a major city hotel Tiffany's Dentophobia - a fear of dentists - takes hold.
It's time to discover who will win the 35th Annual Excellence In Dentistry award - with Dr Jack Hammer the unbackable favourite. As warm-up entertainment Steve makes his way on stage to perform his 'Elvis The Pelvis' show only to discover dentists have an acquired taste and Elvis just isn't one of those tastes. A gig at a dental conference is a tough audience indeed.
In what should be his penultimate career moment Dr Jack Hammer suffers a humiliating gaffe - and it's the hapless Steve and cub reporter Tiffany to blame. Not quite the outcome expected at the 35th Annual Excellence In Dentistry Awards.
